What Sparked you to be an artist?
When I was with Dodgers my manager Dave Roberts called me to the front of the class and asked me what I liked to do. I nervously said “paint” although I had never painted before in my life outside of a paint n sip class I went to right before Spring Training. So he made me make a painting of Maury Wills and present it to the team. It was awful but my teammates said how talented I was and that boost of confidence motivated me to pursue art.
What was the first art piece you’ve sold?
First painting I ever sold was a painting I did for my first show ever at Dodger Stadium the same season I discovered painting. I’m not sure why I thought I was good enough to have an Art show at Dodger stadium but I did and I’m grateful to the people who bought my first works!
What is your most meaningful art creation to date (December 2022)?
This project is honestly one of the most meaningful works. I was able to really spend time reflecting on my life and some pieces of it that I haven’t really shared publicly before. It is a diary that I have never written before.
How would you describe your experience working on the clock?
One of the most enjoyable, intimidating, reflective pieces I've ever worked on. A time stamp that measures work hours... The irony is really special because I've had a life that I didn't really have set hours. I lived my dream of playing MLB to become a professional artist.
I wanted to convey my journey throughout, from the day I was born all the way through baseball and art and Aku, and tell the story in chronological order of the different ups and downs along the way. Not everything is up only. Incredibly grateful to be part of this project and experience, and look forward to everyone seeing it.
